Being a reader...and a writer

I've alway been a voracious reader, devouring book upon book, even at a young age. I grew up on Wind in the Willows, Charlotte's Web, Mary Poppins, Cheaper by the Dozen, National Velvet, Black Beauty, Misty of Chincoteague (do we see a trend here?) as well as all the Bobbsey Twins and Trixie Beldon books. In high school it was 1984, Animal Farm, Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead.

As life, work and family intervened, I had little time to read for enjoyment and little money to spend on books. I moved a lot and, unfortunately, didn't take time to join local libraries. But when I could, I got books at yard sales and discount stores. I quickly learned to buy only thick, LONG books. Why? I could read a normal length paperback in a couple of hours. That got expensive!

I never envisioned myself as a fiction writer. Non-fiction, yes. I've written for work for many years. Consulting gigs, special reports, technical directions. I even wrote web content in the last 1990's and early 2000's for several online companies.

But fiction? Me? I have no imagination....

So now that I am writing fiction, I rarely read. Partly due to time but mostly because I'm afraid I will carry over another writer's voice, or style, or words, or phrases....

Yes, I worry so I don't read....

No frog photo today...this is me, except I gave up and headed to my office and computer. It was one of those nights. No matter how I tried, the brain wouldn't stop churning.

The first thing was an ear worm. You know what that is, right? No? An ear worm is a song you can't get out of your head. You keep hearing it, singing it, humming it. Worst of all, it's often a song you dislike. LOL!

I finally got that to stop and I started thinking about things I needed to do in the morning (of course it was already one in the morning). I tossed and I turned. I shifted and twitched. I covered, then uncovered. Fan on. Fan off. Roll to the left. Roll to the right.

I gave up and got up...wide awake.

At least it's been a productive couple of hours. I caught up on Facebook (okay, not so productive). I caught up on blogs. I updated the website about our property for sale. I cleaned out a bunch of old files on the computer that I really don't need.

It's now almost five am and fortunately, I guess, I'm still awake. I foresee a nap in my future today.

Family - Part Two

I grew up in a small New England town back in the early 50's. My father had two brothers and for most of my early life, they lived in the same town with their families. That meant I had cousins, and fortunately for me, female cousins. Yes, I was the only girl - two brothers.

My mother had one brother and initially he lived in another part of the state but I still got to see those cousins from time to time. Again, more girls (four girls and one boy, to be exact). They eventually moved to southern New Hampshire and we visited more often.
