Invisible

Have you ever felt invisible? I have. Not most times. In fact, I sometimes feel too visible. Most of my life I worried about how I looked, how I sounded, how I appeared to others. Now in my 70s, I worry less about what others think of me. I’m still me. I haven’t changed. Well, except for looking older…

The one time I felt invisible was during a visit to Disney World. It was for our tenth anniversary and we had several days planned. I was having some back issues, especially when walking a lot, so we rented a scooter. I admit to loving the extended energy I had from using it. A world of difference.

A world of difference with how others saw me. Or didn’t. Being at a lower height I was amazed at how many adults didn’t see or acknowledge me until they were ready to run right into me. The children were different, they saw me and walked around me without missing a beat. It was an enlightening experience…

Hubby and I had a discussion the other night about how I never wore bright colors or even flashy socks. All that changed after retirement. First came the fun, colorful socks. Then came the bright print leggings. Why was that? I told him I think I wanted to fade into the background, not stand out. Now, I’m okay with wearing whatever is fun AND comfortable.

Have you ever felt invisible?
